Hair Transplant with Neograft is Making Strip Grafting Obsolete

The sheer number of medications and procedures for hair loss can be overwhelming: finasteride, Rogaine, hair transplant surgery, gene therapy—the list goes on. But, if you are concerned about side effects from medication or wary of invasive strip grafting surgery, it’s common to put off finding a real solution for your hair loss.

Now, there’s a hair loss treatment that is both minimally-invasive AND lasts a lifetime: Neograft hair restoration. Using follicular unit extraction (FUE) to transplant individual healthy hair follicles, Neograft restores a natural hairline and a full head of hair with little downtime and effective, natural results. Here’s how it works.

How does follicular unit extraction (FUE) reverse hair loss?

Follicular unit extraction (FUE) with our Neograft device involves removing one hair follicle at a time from the back or side of the scalp and precisely transplanting each in the area of hair loss. Performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon with an eye for aesthetic precision, FUE achieves truly natural-looking results. This treatment is FDA-cleared, and Eugene plastic surgeon Dr. Kiya Movassaghi has found that it offers unmatched precision and efficiency compared to other hair loss treatment options, making significant hair restoration possible for both men and women.

“I was not a fan of old-fashioned hair restoration that required a scar on the back of the head. Neograft has a higher success rate, and it eliminates both the scar and much of the pain involved with older strip grafting techniques.”

Neograft uses a small device with a tip that precisely and quickly removes a single hair follicle, which is then implanted in the area of hair loss. While tiny scars are left behind, the incisions are incredibly discreet—so much so that, after treatment, you can choose to wear your hair very short with no visible incisions.

Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Kiya Movassaghi is proud to offer Neograft to Eugene hair loss patients.

5 reasons to choose FUE with Neograft over the strip method for hair transplant surgery

Neograft, which uses follicular unit excision, has many clear benefits over other methods of hair restoration. Here are 5 reasons why Neograft is the more convenient, efficient, and effective hair loss surgery:

1. Neograft is minimally-invasive: no general anesthesia, and less downtime

While strip grafting surgery can require 4-8 hours on the operating table under general anesthesia, Neograft is a quicker surgery that shaves hours off the procedure time. Further, Neograft can be performed under local anesthesia only—intravenous sedation is not necessary. This cuts your recovery time significantly, since general anesthesia itself extends recovery time from most surgical procedures.

2. You will have no linear scars after Neograft

Hair restoration with follicular unit extraction (FUE) requires no scalpel, no incision, and no scar; the older strip grafting method required removal of an area of the scalp from the back of the head, where a long incision was made—leaving a permanent linear scar. With FUE, there is minor pinpoint scarring in the extraction area at the back of the head, but after your scalp heals and hair regrows in the area, scarring is not visible to others.

3. Recover from Neograft hair loss surgery more quickly and comfortably

FUE requires only a short recovery period, while strip harvesting requires significant downtime for your body to heal. FUE is performed as an outpatient procedure, meaning that you can go home immediately after surgery. While you may choose to take several days or more of social downtime, many patients return to a desk job or work from home the very next day. You will also be able to get back to your normal exercise routine within a few weeks.

Here’s the full timeline for Neograft results: the area where hair was harvested should be back to normal after about two weeks. The newly transplanted hair will begin to shed away at 2-3 weeks—this is normal—and within 3 to 4 months, you’ll start seeing fuller, healthier hair in the transplanted area. Results are final after about 1 year, and they can last a lifetime.

4. More natural-looking results from hair transplant surgery

It takes about 3-4 months for your hair to resume its normal growth cycle, but once results of FUE are visible, they simply look much better than those of older techniques. Since individual follicles of your own natural, healthy hair are implanted one at a time, we are able to recreate a natural-looking pattern of hair growth.

In contrast, strip grafting runs the risk of scarring that creates visibly delineated borders of the areas where hair was transplanted—potentially requiring a certain hairstyle to conceal scars. After Neograft, you can wear your hair buzzed, short, or long; since scars will not be visible, the length at which you wear your hair will not be a concern.

5. FUE is highly effective at restoring a full head of hair

With Neograft, results are highly effective due to the precision of the proprietary technology. This increases the hair follicles’ survival rate significantly for more predictable results than are possible with strip grafting surgery or medications.
